Childhood
Obesity is on the Rise
Did you know that nearly one out of every five children
is overweight? According to the Centers for Disease Control, the number
of obese children has more than tripled in the last 30 years. Today,
obesity is the number one national health concern for children.
Children are now at greater risk for developing serious health
conditions that once were "adult-only" problems.
Doctors are now seeing a growing number of children with
· Type 2 diabetes;
· High cholesterol, high blood pressure
(heart disease);
· Sleeping problems (apnea or
interrupted
breathing while sleeping);
· Asthma; and
· Low self-esteem (which could lead to depression)
What
Parents Can Do
Maintaining healthy eating habits and participating in regular physical
activities are the two essential ingredients that will help beat the
odds of obesity. Parents play a major role in ensuring that their
children eat nutritious and well-balanced meals and participate in
enjoyable, heart-pumping activities everyday!
